about

LOS ANGELES, CA. – Welcome to Pajarito Plateau, a small slice of American Southwest carved out by country-punk band Devastating Karate. Sharing stories from the shores of Venice Beach, to the high desert of rural New Mexico, back to the shackles of Tucson’s Pima County Courthouse, the band’s fifth release serves up dusty folk tales of modern times. Complimentary downloads of the new EP are now available for a limited time at devastatingkarate.bandcamp.com. Albums and downloads are also available at CDBaby.com, iTunes and various online outlets.

The title track kicks off the album with the energy and power of vintage Devastating Karate, before “Grandma Pat” reveals a more mature sound, including a hooky layer of back-country banjo. In “Arrested,” the band swaps drums for cajon, resulting in a semi-acoustic take on classic surf-punk, doused in political satire. Each tune on the six-song EP features gravelly vocals, delivering a witty perspective on some of the bleaker situations in life. Formerly a trio, Pajarito Plateau introduces a new dimension to Devastating Karate’s sound with the addition of Chris Cohick on lead guitar. Charles Pasarell remains on bass, Zach Lewis drums and Rat Ratliff still fronts the group on Telecaster.

Recording for Pajarito Plateau was completed in two, extensive weekend-long sessions. Production for tracks 3, 5 and 6 was done at Mikael Karlsson’s studio in downtown Los Angeles. Kevin Harp recorded tracks 1, 2 and 4 at bassist Pasarell’s Marina del Rey apartment. Details for Kevin’s setup can be found here: (record.apogeedigital.com/2011/02/recording-a-live-band-right-when-space-is-tight/).

About Devastating Karate:
Formed in the summer of 2005, Devastating Karate is fronted by guitarist Rat Ratliff, with Zach Lewis playing drums and Charles Pasarell on bass. Lead guitarist Chris Cohick joined the former trio in fall, 2010. Described as “honky-tonk, punk-rock drinking music” (Eric and Robert, KXLU, Los Angeles), Devastating Karate released a self-titled album in late 2005, followed by a Southwest tour in the spring of 2006. The 2007 release of their sophomore effort, Santa Monica Lawn Bowling Park (EP), was supported by two West Coast tours and regular performances in the Los Angeles area. After the 2008 release of The Gallery (LP), DK produced their first music video and hit the road for multiple tours and festivals throughout the Southwest. The band received their first Independent Music Award nomination for the concept album The Awesome Depression (LP), released in 2009. Debuted summer 2011, Pajarito Plateau (EP) marks Devastating Karate’s fifth release.

Influenced by groups ranging from Wilco and Kings of Leon, to Devo, Ween and The Pixies, Devastating Karate’s “power, energy and sense of humor equip them with a timeless quality that will probably transcend trends and fads” (Terrance Lam, GM, Downtown Records). Compared to the Supersuckers, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and classified as “Desert Americana Boogie” by Duncan Hudson (Music Director, KXCI, Tucson), DK is “A tongue-in-cheek, honky-tonk tinged power trio that hoists a brew to everything from Hank Williams' earthy country to hormonal '80s hair metal, this bunch is almost as fun as that one Fourth of July where Uncle Kenny passed out on the neighbors' lawn” (Jason Bracelin, Las Vegas Review-Journal). Devastating Karate currently receives airplay in several markets including Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Sacramento, San Luis Obispo, Santa Cruz, Las Vegas, Tucson, San Antonio, Aspen, Vail, Salida, Breckenridge, Las Cruces NM, Dayton OH and Lafayette LA.
